Biography
Max is a native of the Kansas City area and has been performing professionally since 2007. In 2006 he began playing electric bass in the former New Journey Church worship band with Chad and Bret Bourquin (Big Time Grain Co.). From 2007-2012 Max played for singer/songwriter Bret Bourquin in multiple bands, most notably Silver Soul Delight. During this time he began studying with Zach Rizer (former band leader of Kansas City’s "Mouth"). Max was in a Jazz Fusion trio named Electric Soul from 2009-2012 comprised of KMEA (Kansas Music Educators Association) All-State Jazz guitarist Keshav Ramaswami, and KMEA All-State Jazz drummer Nick Penichet. This trio was courted by a record label from Warner Bros. Records (Warner Music Group). In 2012, Max became the bassist for the Nexus Church worship band. While at Nexus, Max met worship leader Victor Gossage, an accomplished singer and songwriter who has toured the United States with many successful musicians, most notably Lester Estelle Jr. (Pillar, Kelly Clarkson).
Between 2012-2014 Max played in a six piece rock/blues band named Deja Voodoo in the Kansas City area and soon thereafter joined a rock/pop/dance band named Retroflex with Victor Gossage. Max graduated from Spring Hill High School in 2012 and accepted a music scholarship at Ottawa University (OU), where he later received his Instrumental Music Education and Jazz Studies Performance degree for the Electric/Upright bass. Throughout his undergraduate collegiate career Max was the Principal Bassist in the University Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, and also the electric/upright bassist in the University’s top jazz Combo. While at OU he studied under Todd Wilkinson, Keith Mallory, Steven McDonald, Bill McKemy, and Kansas City Legend, Bob Bowman. Bob received a Grammy award while touring with the famous Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, and is highly revered as a master among Jazz bassists in the United States.
From 2017-2021, Max toured and recorded with the United States as the full time bassist for the country band, Big Time Grain Company. Big Time Grain Co. has played many high profile shows including the Royals World Series Parade in front of an estimated 900,000 people, and played with many touring acts, including Luke Combs, Wynonna Judd, Travis Tritt, etc. They have also had their music featured on National Television on NFL broadcast. During this time, Max also toured and played with many other Kansas City Acts such as State Line Drive, and Drew Six.
In 2021, Max accepted position as the Worship Director at Nexus Church where he, alongside the Nexus Worship and Production teams, built a multi-cultural culture of worship which still continues to grow and flourish. Within this time, Max received his Masters Degree in High-Incidence Education from Fort Hays State University, while also growing as a production manager and sound engineer. Max now continues to play bass and produce content as an audio engineer at Nexus Church, worshipping and performing alongside his brother, Nick Penichet, with Tobbi and Tommi White of Donald Lawrence and The Tri-City Singers. Tobbi and Tommi tour and perform with prominant Gospel artists around the world such as Kirk Franklin, Todd Dulaney, Kelontae Gavin, etc.

As an experienced and trained musician in multiple genres, Max is able to offer a wide range of services, including professional music theory centered lessons on guitar, and electric/upright bass.
